1999, The Mic
I was 14 years old, and this is where my love for poetry evolved! I wrote this poem in my literature class, which was later received recognition by 9th grade teacher, and placed on display in the school’s library. This was a time in my life when I made a significant turning point, I became a “Super Christian.” Zealous about discovering the mysteries of God and sharing what I’ve learned with my peers. Anyone who knew me back then at CHS (Decatur, GA), knew that I was Jesus Freak, by choice, lol. In retrospect, I was very “green” in some of my outlooks on life, but I cannot deny that my naivety did not change my love for people. I was authentic in my beliefs. This poem reflects my curiosity about human behavior and why people do what they do. As an adult, I can say who I was then has shaped me into the woman I am today, an activist for social justice and empowering youth and young adults to live their best lives.
