#CAP.A.CITY

Happy New Year! I don’t know about you but I’m still transitioning over into 2016!

Some say, “your home is a reflection of your life.” I believe that to be true. Like most people, I wanted to do something significant to bring in the new year.  I started by changing my environment – I completely rearranged my office at work and my bedroom at home.  While clearing out my external spaces, I used those moments to reflect over the emotional baggage I needed to release as well. Unlike most reorganizing, an internal cleansing needs more time than a new year countdown…it’s an ongoing process.

I am still tossing out the old so I can welcome the new. This process is liberating yet burdensome at the same time because it forces me to reckon with my personal truths while juggling everyday life. Constantly transitioning from one reality to the next; like identifying my next career move, investing in my passion, how to pay for rent this month, changing bad habits, prioritizing my health, and detaching from unhealthy relationships.  The hardest part about transition is letting go of what’s familiar. Let’s be real, starting over sucks! At least at first. However, I’ve come to the realization that some comfort zones are toxic, and it isn’t worth holding on to. Now, I am willing to forsake it all in order to find something better.  The first step to letting go or finding closure is mastering the art of acceptance. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Most of us find ourselves restless and discontent during this time of the year. Maybe it’s because we’ve reached our cap. Or maybe we are juggling several transitions at once: relationship transitions, job transitions, discipline transitions…which ever transition or transitions we face, it’s purpose is to bring about change.

Whenever there is internal pressure, it means we have out grown our current situation and it is time to transition to the next stage of our lives.  But in order to do so, we have to release whatever is holding us down (fear, depression, guilt, etc.) We cannot carry old baggage into a new journey. It will only sabotage our growth.

Today, I am still releasing regrets, learning something new, and juggling everyday life all at the same time. These transitions are overwhelming at times, but I have grown to appreciate the nuggets of wisdom I’ve stumbled upon in the process.

Life changes has its way of shifting at its own pace, and at its own time (a.k.a. God’s timing).  I believe God’s timing gives us the grace we need to prepare for the next phase in our lives. So, if time seems to be going too fast – it means we have reached a point of acceptance and preparation to take on the next journey. On the other hand, if time seems to be “at a stand still” it’s God’s grace giving us time to mature. Diamonds are made out of pressure and heat. Anything of quality is made out of a process. What makes us any different? “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” -(James 1:2-4).

Even if the process takes us months or years; it’s never too late to switch gears. On January 8th, I wanted to post a new poem from my upcoming book, but life got in the way. 🙂 The number 8 means “new beginnings.” Although I am two weeks late, I won’t let my delay stop me from moving forward. The delay was a part of my process. I’ve learned a lot in between the frustration and irritation. Most of all, I’ve gained the discipline of resilience.

January 2016 Focus:

My new beginning starts today (or everyday for that matter). Today, I will accept who I am, where I am, and what I will not settle for.

CAP.A.CITY

“I’ve reached my cap in a city that no longer supports the drive I have inside. (Capacity)”

What are the caps in your city?

Inspired by the song, “City Burns” by Andra Day
